Vision is More Than Sight: Breaking Down Barriers to Become a Scientist

Thursday, October 21, 2021
7:00 – 8:30 PM

Presented virtually via Zoom webinar

Mona Minkara is a blind Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at Northeastern University. She lost her vision at a young age having been diagnosed with macular degeneration and cone-rod dystrophy at seven years old. In spite of the doubts about her inability to accomplish her goals, Mona told herself that she could and would one day become a scientist. Teachers did not always know how to approach her education, and learning was often a struggle. Towards the end of high school, she began to realize something about her own potential—that it was drastically different from society’s expectation of a blind individual. Mona began taking advanced classes and surprised everyone with her success. From then on, she realized that her blindness was not a dead-end for academic advancement.
